PNG PM’s Stance Against Family Violence Welcomed
The International Coalition for Women in Shooting and Hunting (WiSH) have commended Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister, Sir Michael Somare, for speaking out against family violence.
“It is always heartening when public figures highlight the unacceptable nature of violence towards women, and we congratulate Prime Minister Somare for challenging attitudes about family violence,” said WiSH Chair Dr Samara McPhedran.
Prime Minister Somare has appealed to violent husbands to learn to resolve marital differences without turning to violence.
“Women’s groups have been lobbying for attitudinal change in PNG for many years, and it is clear that their resolve is paying off.”
“We hope Prime Minister Somare’s public stance paves the way for ongoing change,” said Dr McPhedran.
