New Public Campsites great for families

New Public Campsites great for families in the Outdoors

The Council of Outdoor Recreation Associations (CORANZ) has applauded Conservation Minister Chris Carter’s initiative of opening 108 additional campsites on Public Conservation Land, to compensate for private motor camps closing in coastal areas.

“It is a great initiative by the Minister" Hugh Barr, spokesman for the Council, said. "There are great accessible and scenic coastal sites, and lake, river, mountain and forest sites available all over our public lands. His initiative should encourage more use of the outdoors by families and others.”

“These new campsites should encourage families to take the kids out there, and let them get a taste of the outdoors. With more and more New Zealand kids living in cities, they are missing out on experiencing New Zealand’s unique outdoors heritage, and what it really is to be a New Zealander.”

“In our experience there is great interest in the outdoors by all age groups, once they get introduced to it” Hugh Barr said. “These new campsites also complement the Minister’s promotional initiative of waiving Department of Conservation hut fees on Great Walks and other huts, starting next year.”
