Alliance To hold 07 national conference in Dunedin

Alliance Party holds 2007 national conference in Dunedin

The Alliance Party is holding its 2007 national conference in Dunedin on Labour Weekend, Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 October.

Delegates will gather from around New Zealand to elect co-leaders for the 2008 election year, discuss new policy and strategy, and hear from high profile speakers in open to the public sessions.

Alliance Party President Victor Billot says the party is positioning itself as the "strong left wing voice" in New Zealand politics.

He says the Alliance has key political goals based around the "public good" including free education, quality public health care, affordable housing and power, and secure well paid jobs.

"We seek a much more equal society where all people have access to the basics, which will create a more stable, secure and democratic New Zealand."

The conference is being held in the Alexander MacMillan Room, Community House, 283 Moray Place (corner Great King Street), Dunedin.

The conference will be opened at 10am Saturday 20 October by the National President of the Maritime Union, Phil Adams.

The two conference speakers are political writer Chris Trotter and publisher Jack Yan - both sessions are open to the public with free entry.

Chris Trotter: guest speaker
At 1.30pm on Saturday 20 October, political commentator and author Chris Trotter will present “Re-claiming our Past: The Left’s Crucial Role in New Zealand’s History.”
Chris Trotter is well known as the leading public intellectual of the left in New Zealand, a role he has recently confirmed with the publication of “No Left Turn”, a political and social history of New Zealand and the quest for social justice.

Jack Yan: guest speaker
At 1pm on Sunday 21 October, publisher and branding expert Jack Yan will discuss “The use of brands and innovation to achieve full employment in New Zealand.”
Jack Yan has worked internationally on global branding projects, started the first digital typeface design company in New Zealand and was one of the first web publishers in New Zealand.
His views on socially responsible business, design and globalization are challenging and relevant.
