Wellington beds in, makes love for peace
If it was good enough for John Lennon to spend all week in bed in the spirit of global peace, then it’s good enough for Wellington’s music and cultural community to do the same for just one day.
Wellingtonians are being asked to join with local musicians, artists and identities for a day-long bed-in to celebrate world peace on John Lennon’s birthday, October 9, for the 2007 Bed To Air from 8am to 6pm.
The festivities will be hosted by iconic Wellington fashion store Rex Royale in the heart of Cuba Mall, and features an all-day live-to-air broadcast on Radio Active 89FM, from two king-sized beds in Rex Royale’s storefront.
The event is organised by Radio Active 89FM’s ‘Amplifier’ show host Paul ‘Redbird Jr’ Shelley to help highlight the global peace movement and raise awareness for local charities and organisations that work and help others.
“I’m all for peace but I had been wondering whether it was naive to think we, the regular folk, can make a difference,” said Shelley.
“Then I thought ‘bugger it’, I can make a difference and I can make it fun. I like Lennon, I like parties and I like beds – the bigger the better for all my friends. Lennon was a crusader for goodness so his birthday is a good chance to make a statement for peace.”
Throughout the day, local organisations and identities will join Shelley in Redbird’s Lovenest to talk on-air about issues relating to world peace and sustainability. “We want the Wellington public to swing by, hang about, hear the entertainment and maybe even share a cuddle in the bed,” added Shelley.
The line-up of entertainers dropping in includes Barnaby Weir (Black Seeds), Sheba, Module, Tommy Ill, Odessa and Warren Maxwell, and DJs The Shimmy Crew, Marek, Kava, Takkas, Jake Silver and Bryce.
Cuba St restaurant Scopa will be providing specially-made Peace Pizzas. Participating organisations will be Trade Aid, The Salvation Army, Amnesty International, Oxfam, Peace Wellington and TroopsOutNow.
The Bed to Air organisers are grateful for the support of Cool Moves, Rex Royale, Radio Active 89FM, Scopa, Sandwiches Nightclub and The Mighty Mr A.
