Ali Panah Released on Bail, Copeland Delighted

Independent MP Gordon Copeland, who earlier today made an impassioned plea on behalf of Christian convert Ali Panah, has expressed his delight at the news that he has today been released on bail into the custody of his vicar.

“This is a great outcome and helps to restore my faith in New Zealand’s willingness to uphold fundamental human rights.”

“The release of Ali Panah on bail follows the precedent set for Thomas Yadegary who, earlier this year, was granted bail after two years in jail.”

“However this is not the end of the road since, just on Friday, I made representation to government on behalf of a third Iranian who is likewise seeking a permit to remain in New Zealand following his conversion to Christianity. His conversion also is authentic, fully documented, and attested to by the leadership of a large Auckland based church.“
