Information for Reporters on New Coronial System

Information for Reporters on the New Coronial System

The new coronial system established by the Coroners Act 2006 comes into effect on Sunday 1 July 2007.
A website for the new coronial system will be available from 1 July at http://www.justice.govt.nz/coroners and includes:

* background information on the new coronial system

* a register of summary recommendations made by coroners in cases opened under the new coronial system

* contact details for regional offices and National Office.

Reporters with enquiries about specific coronial cases should contact the responsible coroner directly through the relevant regional office. If the responsible coroner is not known, the relevant regional office or National Office will be able to tell you who they are.

Some cases opened under the old system – that is, before 1 July 2007 – will continue to be worked on by the original coroner while some will be transferred to the newly appointed full-time coroners. The relevant regional office or National Office will be able to tell you who the responsible coroner is for any case.
