Corrections staff and community touch gloves for CanTeen
Staff from the Waikato/Central Region are banding together on May 25 for an event to raise money for CanTeen an organisation supporting Teen cancer sufferers.
The event called ‘CURE – CanTeen’ (Communities Unite for Regional Event) will involve staff from Tongariro/Rangipo, Waikeria and the soon to open Spring Hill Corrections Facility, as well as people from the local communities.
The evening charity event at the Trust Waikato Events Centre in Te Awamutu will include boxing matches, sponsored head shaving and entertainment provided by prison staff and members of the community.
It is the latest in a string of events organised by prison staff from within the region, and they are hoping it will be the biggest event yet.
“We decided a few years ago to take action to help fight this devastating disease and participate in positive activities in the community” says Acting Waikato/Central Regional Manager Gavin Dalziel.
“We employ a large number of staff, and I’d say most, if not all of them, have been affected by cancer in some way.”
The event has the support of their local communities, Police and Fire Services from Te Awamutu and Otorohanga, and Mayors of both districts.
