Police Association Renews Call For Commission Of Inquiry Into Gangs & Organised Crime

"The Police Association renews the call for a Commission of Inquiry into gangs and organised crime," Police Association President Greg O'Connor said today in wake of the tragic killing of a little girl in Wanganui.

"We began saying that an inquiry was needed back as far as 2003 and it would be inevitable that innocent people would start to be killed and this is exactly what has happened."

Mr O'Connor said, "The sort of gang violence that is boiling over in towns and cities around New Zealand is merely the tip of the 'ice'-berg. Underlying these turf wars, are the millions of dollars at stake in controlling the 'P' market."

"Every year that goes by, that the Authorities fail to understand the extent of the sphere of intimidation of the burgeoning organised crime industry, just increases the amount of investment needed, to root them out in the future – if indeed that will be possible," said Mr O'Connor.

"Millions of dollars have been spent on an inquiry into Police behaviour, now it is time to start concentrating on the behaviour of our organised criminals," said Mr O'Connor.

"Until we understand the extent of the problem, we will not be able to properly focus our efforts on exterminating this threat to New Zealand's security"
