Smokefree Legislation helped Problem Gamblers – till now!

The new move taken by the Gambling Commission that will allow gambling operators to have machines in outdoor smoking areas will seriously impact on those addicted to gambling, according to New Zealand’s leading smokefree advocacy group Action on Smoking and Health (ASH).

“We are shocked to hear that gambling profits have taken precedence over a person’s health and wellbeing in the latest decision,” says Sneha Paul, ASH Spokesperson.

“One of the purposes of the smokefree legislation was to limit the harms of smoking within eating, drinking and gambling venues, with the additional bonus of breaking the ‘trance’ problem gamblers can enter while on the pokies. The Gambling Commission’s recent decision undermines this vital health gain.

“Smoke-free legislation that assists smokers and gamblers should be applauded rather than knocked,” says Ms Paul.

“Surely the health and well being of families must be given priority over casino profits?”
