Caritas responds to those affected by tsunami
in Solomon IslandS

Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand, the Catholic agency for justice, peace and development, is pledging $10,000 towards immediate relief assistance for those affected by the earthquake and tsunami in Western Solomon Islands.

Director of Caritas, Michael Smith reported’ We have had reports from our church contacts, in particular the Dominican Friars, that there has been significant destruction in the Western Solomons. Reports indicate that the villages of Nusabaruka and Fishing Village near the town of Gizo are completely destroyed - these villages are home to approximately 200 people. We are not yet able to confirm the loss of life in these villages. The small island of Loga in the harbour of the town of Gizo has also been badly hit by the Tsunami. The wharfs and buildings, including school classrooms have been completely destroyed.”

Michael Smith also noted that “Caritas assistance will be provided through the Dominicans and other church agencies to assist people most in need.”

Caritas will continue to monitor the situation closely and respond to community needs as they develop.
