Coalition for Open Government re-forming to press for election finance laws

A group will be launched in Wellington tomorrow to campaign for strong new election finance laws. The group, called the Coalition for Open Government, is a reactivation of the 1980s Coalition for Open Government that successfully pushed for New Zealand's freedom of information law (the Official Information Act).

The Government is poised to introduce an election finance bill in the near future for passing later this year.

The new Coalition for Open Government will be developing legislation proposals, encouraging debate, evaluating the Government's proposals and mobilising public support for the strongest possible new law.

The group's key proposals, patrons and plans will be announced at the press conference tomorrow morning [Monday 2 April].
