Red Flag To Fly Over Queen St – Unite Union Opens For Business
The red flag of the Unite Union will be flying over Auckland’s Queen St business district from Friday March 23 when the union formally opens its new offices.
Unite is new Zealand’s fastest growing union and has been able to open it’s smart new facilities on the top floor of “Unite House” on the corner of Queen St and Wellesley St by forming a partnership with Te Wananga O Aotearoa and the United Credit Union to supply both educational courses and banking facilities for its members.
The opening will be attended by Council of Trade Unions Secretary Carol Beaumont, CTU vice-president Helen Kelly, and Auckland Regional Council chair Mike Lee.
Unite Union general secretary Matt McCarten says the new facilities are a huge step forward for the union movement. “It shows that unions are coming back into their own” said Mr McCarten.
“Through campaigns like ‘Supersizemypay.com’ and ‘Hotel Wakeup Call’ we have been able to deliver real improvements in wages and conditions for thousands of low-paid workers. Now with the courses we can offer together with the cheaper banking facilities and a discount card - we can deliver a bigger range of benefits and services than ever before.”
