New Airport Rules Pending

New aviation regulations on liquids, aerosols and gels in carry-on luggage will be introduced in New Zealand on 31 March, and will significantly change the way that passengers organise their luggage. New Zealand airports and border agencies are currently preparing for the change and are appealing to the travelling public to arrive at the airport with carry-on luggage which meets the new requirements.

The new measures will require all international passengers to carry liquids, aerosols or gels in containers of 100ml or less. Passengers' carry-on luggage may include as many 100ml containers as will fit into a single re-sealable transparent plastic bag of one litre volume.

"Delays will be avoided if passengers are informed of the new requirements and have taken a few moments at home while packing to consider the items they will be taking in their carry-on luggage," says Darin Cusack, General Manager Service & Operations at Christchurch International Airport. Mr Cusack says that provided passengers pack the liquids, aerosols or gels which they would like to take as cabin baggage, into a clear bag which meets the new requirements, the check in and security screening process will remain straightforward.

Brochures regarding the new regulations are available through travel agents and airports, and passengers seeking further information are advised to check the Ministry of Transport's website www.flysmart.govt.nz.

Summary of the new requirements:
Any liquids, aerosols or gels in carry-on luggage for international flights must be in containers of 100ml or less, and enclosed in one, one litre resealable transparent plastic bag.
This bag must be individually presented at the security screening point.
Passengers are encouraged to be prepared and pack these items separately before arriving at the airport. The resealable bags are available at supermarkets.
Airport retail and duty free staff have been fully trained to answer questions regarding the purchase of duty free liquids, aerosols and gels, and will be able to provide full information to customers.
These regulations apply to international flights only, from 31 March 2007.
