ihug Welcomes Government's Action To Combat Spam
Following the government's announcement today that a new law has been passed to 'fight the avalanche of spam', one of
New Zealand's leading telecommunications companies has applauded the move.
ihug CEO Mark Rushworth says they're pleased the government has joined the fight against spam.
"Our filters stop around 8 to 10 million spam emails getting into our customers' mailboxes every day but spammers are
continually developing new ways to beat the best filters. It's not only annoying for customers but from a business point
of view there is a huge cost involved in stopping these emails. Anything the government can do to help reduce the amount
of spam is a good move for everyone."
Rushworth says that ihug's spam and virus filtering system is state of the art and they're currently spending around
$350,000 to increase its capacity to account for predicted growth in spam and virus levels.
"Even with the government's new legislation spam isn't going to go away. Although the origin of spam is outside our
control, we can still be proactive about reducing the affect it has on our customers."
