Animal rights group says the Government should take action against whalers, not Sea Shepherd

A Wellington animal rights group says Chris Carter should resign as Minister for the Environment if he is unwilling to take action against whaling ships.

The Wellington Animal Rights Network says it supports the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society's efforts to disrupt the whale hunt in waters south of New Zealand. Spokesperson Mark Eden says aggressive action is necessary to save whales because Chris Carters 'do nothing' approach is not working.

"Chris Carter is all talk and no action. Whales are being killed in a whale sanctuary and the only people doing anything about it are the Sea Shepherd crews. Every day they disrupt the hunt lives are being saved. Chris Carter keeps saying he is opposed to whaling. He has the power to stop the killing but seems to be spending all his time complaining about whale defenders instead" said Mr Eden.

WARN agrees with Captain Watson when he said this week "Our actions are hardly extreme. We have been rather restrained so far. Illegal Japanese whaling is extreme. Killing whales in an international whale sanctuary is extreme. Slaughtering endangered species is extreme. I believe that Mr. Carter thinks that anything not done from behind a desk is extreme."

Mr Eden says "Chris Carter would be quite willing to use the airforce and navy to stop illegal fishing if theres money in it, but he cant seem to bring himself to do anything to save whales. His claim that he is an active defender of whales is PR spin and he should resign if he hasn't got the guts to do his job.
