Health Minister Committed to Supporting Maternity Sector
The New Zealand College of Midwives (NZCOM) is delighted with the announcement of a further $11.4 million for Lead Maternity Carers (LMCs).
The move comes as a result of discussions between the Ministry of Health and NZCOM over the past twelve to eighteen months on issues facing the midwifery workforce. Norma Campbell, NZCOM Midwifery Advisor says “The Minister has demonstrated a commitment to midwives which extends beyond financial support, we are thrilled our concerns have been recognised and we have commitment to the internationally acclaimed model of care we have in New Zealand.”
“The Minister was clear there is ongoing support for the LMC model and for a nationally consistent service provision, which has been a focus of The College since the early 90’s” states Campbell. It is envisaged the provision of further funding will make midwifery a more viable option as a career and ensure every pregnant woman in New Zealand has access to continuity of care through pregnancy and birth.
Midwifery and Maternity Provider Organisation (MMPO) Director, Dr Chris Hendry, also present at the meeting, believes “the additional funding will show midwives they are supported and there is a longer term strategy of support for them. The funding will be made available through the Section 88 Notice and will go a long way to addressing the current maternity workforce issues”. (MMPO are the largest maternity provider organisation in New Zealand).
Sue Bree, president of NZCOM and LMC midwife in the Bay of Islands, agrees that “this funding and the goodwill demonstrated by all parties at the meeting yesterday is encouraging and ensures midwives will receive the support they need to continue to offer a woman centred service that is second to none”.
The funding will be made available from July 1, 2007.
