Former Temporary Worker Admits Writing on Exam Papers
A former temporary New Zealand Post mail-processing worker has admitted writing abusive comments on a number of marked NCEA papers.
New Zealand Post instigated an investigation as a result of complaints from a number of NCEA examination candidates in the Christchurch area.
Postal Services Chief Executive Peter Fenton says the worker’s short-term employment with the company finished last week before the tampering matter came to light. The tampering has prompted a review of the processes used by New Zealand Post.
Mr Fenton said the former employee described the actions as a ‘joke’. It was intended as a prank relating to some marked papers which the employee recognised as belonging to pupils at the employee’s former school.
However Mr Fenton said he was extremely disappointed. “This person has caused damage to the reputation of New Zealand Post and lowered our trustworthiness in the eyes of exam candidates and the public in general.”
New Zealand Post will write to the targeted students to apologise for the distress caused. It has also apologised to the Qualifications Authority.
