NZ Govt taking the right approach on whaling – Greenpeace
Greenpeace today congratulated the New Zealand Government for leading a 27-country protest to the Japanese Government over its upcoming Antarctic whaling plans.
"The Government has aimed its protest at the right organisation – the Japanese Fisheries Agency, the huge faceless bureaucracy which is responsible for the whaling," said Jo McVeagh, Greenpeace whales campaigner.
"Meanwhile polling tells us that two thirds of Japanese people are against their Government's whaling programme. Yet this massive and very powerful bureaucracy, which is not answerable to the public, continues to waste Japanese taxpayers' money on whaling," said McVeagh.
The Japanese Government's whaling fleet will arrive in the Antarctic soon – and this year plans to kill 935 minke whales and 10 endangered fin whales.
Greenpeace will be announcing its plans for the upcoming whaling season soon.
Meanwhile the organisation is stepping up its campaign in Japan to communicate with the public who are not in favour of whaling.
