Deputy Secretary (Central Agencies) Appointed
Secretary to the Treasury John Whitehead has today announced that Tony Hartevelt has been appointed Deputy Secretary
(Central Agencies) in the Treasury.
Mr Hartevelt is currently Deputy State Services Commissioner at the State Services Commission, a position he has held
since 2001.
Mr Whitehead said the new position of Deputy Secretary (Central Agencies) had been created to provide an extra focus on
working across the three Central Agencies (Treasury, SSC and DPMC).
“That focus should increase our collective leverage on performance issues, and ensure internal co-ordination and
appropriate prioritisation of issues of interest to Central Agencies and Ministers collectively.
“Mr Hartevelt will work across the three new outcome-based groups at the Treasury –State Sector Performance, Economic
Performance and Macroeconomic – and his role will include helping to co-ordinate the wider processes resulting from the
Central Agencies Review and improving linkages across Central Agencies and the wider public sector.
Mr Whitehead said that Mr Hartevelt has a wealth of experience in the public and private sectors. Previously a partner
at PricewaterhouseCoopers, he has advised on, supported and led the development and implementation of major change
initiatives across a range of organisations.
“Given his recent work at the SSC, Mr Hartevelt also has a clear understanding of Central Agency issues, and will
provide strong leadership in this area, both for the Treasury and working with the SSC and DPMC and other agencies.
Mr Whitehead said he was delighted with the appointment, and is looking forward to the contribution that Mr Hartevelt
will make to the Treasury and across the public sector.
