Ministry of Foreign Affairs Advises Caution In Tonga
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has upgraded its travel advice for Tonga. The advice says there is some risk to your safety in Tonga. The advice can be found on www.safetravel.govt.nz
There are approximately 600 New Zealanders resident in Tonga.
There is some risk to your safety in Tonga and we advise caution. There are reports of civil disorder in Nuku’alofa. We advise New Zealanders to avoid the downtown area of Nuku’alofa especially areas around government buildings. You should also avoid demonstrations and large gatherings as the situation is unpredictable and violence could break out with little warning. We recommend you follow the advice of the local authorities, and monitor the media.
Telecommunications in the Kingdom appear to have been disrupted during the unrest.
New Zealanders visiting or resident in Tonga are encouraged to register their details online.
