Union members reject pay offer from TVNZ – industrial action to target high profile shows

Union members from the Public Service Association and the Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union have overwhelmingly rejected a revised pay offer from TVNZ and will start rolling industrial action targeted at high profile New Zealand-made programmes.

“There will be a series of surprise stoppages aimed at high profile New Zealand-made programmes,” said PSA National Secretary Richard Wagstaff. “We want TVNZ to understand that we are serious about a settlement that recognises the important role that TVNZ staff play.”

The unions have set up an Industrial Action Committee which will determine the timing and nature of the industrial action.

“We will not be giving TVNZ any notice of the stoppages which are aimed at showing the broadcaster the crucial role staff play in operations.”

The unions are seeking a 5 percent pay increase and additional annual leave. TVNZ are offering a 2.25 percent pay increase and no additional annual leave. This was been overwhelmingly rejected by union members.

“This industrial action is a last resort by union members who are tired of being taken for granted by TVNZ,” said Richard Wagstaff.

“TVNZ could stop this action immediately by offering a fair deal which shows that they value the important work staff do,” said Andrew Little, EMPU National Secretary.

The unions represent over 300 members at TVNZ in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch and are presenters, producers, administrators, camera people and technical support and scheduling.
