Online Petition Collects Over 43,000 Names in Just Seven Days
An online petition asking the Governor General to withhold the Royal Assent to the Government’s validating legislation
has collected over 40,000 names in a week and become the world’s fastest-growing.
Petition organiser Blair Mulholland formally “presented” the petition to Government House by an emailed link last
Thursday. The petition will be left online indefinitely, and is still gathering signatures.
“I’ve been staggered at the number of people who have signed.”Mulholland said. “For something I set up in fifteen
minutes as a gut reaction to what the government did, it seems to have really struck a chord with people.”
“It shows the level of dissatisfaction out there that politicians can just get away with something like this.”
Buoyed by its success, Mulholland is now looking at organising a paper petition for a referendum ensuring politicians
can no longer abuse public funds during elections.
“The online petition sends a very strong message, but I am urging people signing it to register on my website
www.thepetition.co.nz to receive a formal version on paper.”
“We should have a referendum to stop corruption creeping into our political system.”
