Politicians must respect independence of Auditor-General says public servants’ union

The union representing public servants is calling on politicians from across the political spectrum to respect the independence of the Auditor-General, Kevin Brady and the findings of his report into election spending.

“Public servants are faced with a difficult job in providing free and frank advice to Ministers and Parliament, politicians must accept the validity of this advice,” said Brenda Pilott, PSA National Secretary.

The Auditor General provides Parliament independent assurance over the performance and accountability of public organisations.

“The Auditor-General has an important role in independently monitoring the public service on behalf of Parliament, a role which Members of Parliament are not capable of doing.”

Public servants are required to provide free and frank advice to Ministers. This advice must be honest, impartial and comprehensive.

“Any allegations against the independence or impartiality of the Auditor-General are an attack on the integrity of public servants generally and must not be tolerated.”

“The requirement to provide advice that is free and frank ensures that the public interest and long-term consequences of policies are taken into account, rather than short term political gain,” said Brenda Pilott.

The PSA is New Zealand’s largest union representing over 55,000 public service workers in local and central government, health and community services.
