Support For Women Peace Makers
The National Council of Women of New Zealand (NCWNZ) at their national conference held last week voted unanimously to give support for innovative peace initiatives undertaken by women to end long-standing conflicts in their regions.
"Women's involvement in peaceful resolution of conflict, whether at a national, regional or global level, is crucial in reconciling the opposite sides to reach successful outcomes," said Christine Low, National President NCWNZ.
The first ever International Women's Commission for a Just and Sustainable Israeli–Palestinian Peace is currently holding meetings with other international leaders at the 61st General Assembly of the United Nations. The meetings are to focus international attention on the need to resolve the longstanding Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
This approach is mandated by UN Security Council Resolution 1325, passed unanimously by the UN Security Council in 2000, which specifically addresses the impact of war on women, and women's contributions to conflict resolution and sustainable peace.
