The name of the Office of the Commissioner is to change to Police National Headquarters.

Police General Manager of Public Affairs, Michael Player, says the Office of the Commissioner name has outlived its usefulness.

"The title was created as part of the Martin Review in 1998 to signal that Police were organised on a decentralised basis and that the Molesworth Street office should be focussed on the needs of the Commissioner. In reality 180 Molesworth Street has always housed a mixture of support group and service centre staff.

"Police National Headquarters is the term that was used prior to the 1999. It is a term still often referred to within Police and many news media outlets have continued to use the name in reporting on police stories emanating from Wellington."

Mr Player said that a tiny amount of expenditure on some foyer signage and re-recording of "on-hold" telephone messages was virtually the only investment required to make the name change.

"We're in time for the next Wellington phone directory and business cards and other stationery would only be replaced as stocks ran out.

"Even the executive floor signage doesn't need changing. The original sign from the 1990s still graces the reception desk wall," said Mr Player.
