Allegations Against Field - Police Investigation
Police Commence Investigation Into Allegations Against Taito Phillip Field
31 August 2006
Police have commenced an investigation into allegations against Taito Phillip Field, Member of Parliament.
Following consideration of the Ingram report, the Commissioner of Police received legal advice suggesting that an investigation may be warranted. The Commissioner considered the advice on Tuesday and on Wednesday Detective Superintendent Malcolm Burgess was tasked with commencing work on the case.
Other staff will be assigned as required by the scope and nature of the allegations.
The investigation will include assessing relevant information and will include looking at allegations raised over the weekend on Television New Zealand's Sunday programme. Any further complaints in regard to this matter will be assessed by the inquiry team to determine whether they require any further investigation.
It is not known how long the investigation will take though experience with other police cases potentially involving many witnesses suggests it is likely to be months rather than weeks.
