Alan Thompson today started his new role as Chief Executive of the Ministry of Transport, and Secretary for Transport.

Mr Thompson brings over 30 years’ experience to the role, having worked in a number of positions in Australia including 16 years as chief executive in public sector agencies.

In November 2004, Mr Thompson was appointed as inaugural Chief Executive of the Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA). In this role, he focused on expanding passenger transport services and establishing strategic directions for transport in Auckland.

Prior to this, Mr Thompson was the Chief Executive of the Australian Capital Territory Department of Urban Services. Other leadership roles included Chief Executive of the Australian Capital Territory Chief Minister’s Department, and Secretary of the Victorian Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

Mr Thompson is a qualified engineer, and holds a Master of Science degree and a diploma in studies of Earth Sciences.

Taking up his appointment today, Mr Thompson said he was looking forward to leading the Ministry of Transport in its key role of providing transport solutions for New Zealand.

“I’m pleased to join such an interesting organisation which is charged with delivering the New Zealand Transport Strategy, the blueprint for transport in this country. I’m particularly looking forward to the challenge of working towards the Government’s vision of providing New Zealand with an affordable, integrated, safe, responsive and sustainable transport system,” said Mr Thompson.

Mr Thompson replaces Dr Robin Dunlop, who is retiring after a long and distinguished career in the Public Service, including roles as Chief Executive of the Ministry of Transport, Transfund New Zealand and Transit New Zealand. Dr Dunlop was recently awarded a Queen’s Service Order (QSO) for services to transport in the New Zealand Honours.
