For Immediate Release

New Zealand well represented at international tobacco control conference

The cream of New Zealand’s anti-tobacco experts travel to Washington this week for the 13th World Conference on Tobacco or Health.

Becky Freeman ASH Director says,” It is fantastic that a large number of experts attending the conference have received funding or scholarships on both national and international levels.

This shows that there is increasing world-wide recognition of the success of NZ tobacco control activities.”

Te Reo Marama (Maori Smokefree Coalition) youth advocate Skye Kimura is one of two Maori representatives, who have received sponsorship from the United States to attend.

“New Zealand is leading the field in lots of areas, especially the development of indigenous practice and Smokefree legislation – so it’s great to see some of us going to share our knowledge.” Te Reo Marama Director Shane Bradbrook said.

“We really appreciate the financial and professional support we receive from our indigenous colleagues around the globe”.

The 13th World Conference on Tobacco or Health will be held in Washington, from July 12-15. The conference will feature the latest research on the science of tobacco and its effects, and presenters will share new data on topics including addiction, cessation, public policy, second-hand smoke, and smokeless tobacco.

The conference will also allow delegates an opportunity to examine the impact of the World Health Organisation’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). For more information go to www.2006conferences.org/t-index.php
