Consistent Care Needed In NZ Maternity System

Consistent Care Needed In NZ Maternity System

The New Zealand College of Midwives says the proposed changes to the Section
88 Notice for Primary Maternity Services shows that the continuity of care
model remains an important key to the success of the New Zealand maternity
system.

NZCOM spokeswoman, Norma Campbell, says the College is pleased the
Government is pledging to continue supporting a quality maternity service
for mums and babies.

"New Zealand has one of the best maternity systems in the world. In fact
NZCOM CEO Karen Guilliland is about to return from Europe where she was
invited to speak to Irish Midwives about how New Zealand provides such an
enviable service to mothers, babies and families," she says.

NZCOM supports the Ministry of Health's consultation process and will now
meet and talk with College members from around the country over the next
twelve weeks to discuss the proposed changes to the Section 88 Notice for
Primary Maternity Services.

Norma Campbell says it would not be appropriate to comment any further at
this stage until College members have thoroughly reviewed the document.
