Ontrack Dispute

29th June 2006

Press release by the Rail and Maritime Transport Union

Ontrack Dispute

Ontrack Infrastructure workers began their dispute in earnest today after the failure of last minute mediated talks.

Reports from around the country indicate strong support for gaining the average rate for the job in the rail industry.

The company’s refusal to meet and continue negotiation has angered Ontrack workers. There is plenty of work to do on other parts of the agreement, even if a settlement on the money remains elusive RMTU advocate Scott Wilson said.

Wellington commuters questioned by reporters this morning showed strong support for the Ontrack workers. The general response from the public has been one of shock at the rates of pay infrastructure workers are paid, some have expressed disbelief at the track worker rate of $14.84 an hour.

Other rail workers employed by Toll Rail and Violia in Auckland have rallied behind their fellow RMTU members in Ontrack, giving what support they can to assist their fellow rail workers get their rates up to a comparable level to theirs.
