Amniocentesis testing must be stopped

Today’s announcement that the Ministry of Health is urgently reviewing the use of amniocentesis testing of unborn babies is a wake up call for our country.

“Amniocentesis testing is eugenic in nature and it exposes an unborn child to the risk of death” says Family Life International media spokesperson; Brendan Malone.

“These tests carry a serious risk of loss of life for the unborn child being subjected to them and their only purpose is to detect disability or genetic abnormalities so that women can be given the opportunity to abort a disabled baby.”

“This is nothing more than eugenics philosophy, which seeks to weed out the “unfit” because they are seen as a blight upon the perfect society. It is a sad reflection upon New Zealand that we consider babies with disabilities to be unworthy of a chance at life, or that we would believe that it is merciful to end the life of a disabled person.”

“The fact that we encourage and allow such testing says to disabled and Down syndrome members of our society that they are a burden that is not worthy of life”says Mr Malone.
