Call for Chief Censor and Deputy to be replaced
Tonight on Prime TV News (5.30 p.m. channel 6) the Society for Promtion of Community Standards Inc. is calling for the Chief Censor, Bill Hastings and his Deputy, Nicola McCully, to be dumped. The report will be replayed on SkyNews (channel 54 Sky Digital) at 7 p.m. tonight. The Society's case will also be spelt out by its secretary and spokesperson David Lane on NewstalkZB commencing 4 p.m. with live interview at 4.10 p.m. this afternoon with Larry Williams.
The Society argues: 1. The censors have been in the job far too long and have become desensitised to the injurious nature of hard-core porn, graphic violence and other "objectionable content" in films, videos and DVDs they regularly watch. 2. The decisions they have issued clearing films depicting explicit scenes of hard-core rape, brutal acts of sodomy, and other objectionable content are out of line with the intent of parliament as embodied in the Classification Act (1993).
3. There are many other New Zealanders who could do the job much better, persons who do reflect the standards the common decency and high ethical standards expected of those appointed the 'gate keepers' of the "public good"
