NZDF In Timor

The New Zealand Defence Force contingent in Dili has secured the New Zealand embassy, protecting the New Zealand ambassador and other personnel.

A further 124 soldiers remain pre-positioned in Townsville, Australia, prior to deploying to Timor Leste on Wednesday.

In Dili, Lieutenant Commander Barbara Cassin said there were large groups of people in the streets of Dili, mainly groups of families. “We were out and about this morning and didn’t see the violent groups of youth we saw yesterday.”

She said as well as securing the embassy and ensuring embassy staff was safe and protected, the NZDF personnel were undertaking checkpoint and roadblock duties.
