Monarchists Accuse MPs of Disloyalty
"The Monarchist League is lowering the tone of the republic debate by accusing Members of Parliament that voted in favour of the Lawyers and Conveyancers Bill of being disloyal" said Republican Movement President Dave Guerin.
"The accusation is simply wrong, and to say an MP is disloyal or unpatriotic to New Zealand is inaccurate and unfair" Mr Guerin said.
"Changing the title of senior lawyers from Queen's Counsel to Senior Counsel simply indicates the independence of these lawyers from the Government - there is nothing sinister in it at all"
"The Monarchists may not accept that the New Zealand public desire independent Senior Counsel, but they should refrain from attacking Members of Parliament"
In a media release today, Monarchist League Chairman Noel Cox stated that "many of the Members of Parliament who have in the past indicated that they are patriotic and loyal New Zealanders have chosen to remain silent in the face of a serious assault upon our national heritage."
