War Anniversary Marked

This Friday Christchurch's Peace Action Network will mark the third anniversary of the invasion of Iraq.

On the night of the invasion, people gathered in Cathedral Square to show their opposition to the war. Three years on, the event will be repeated, starting at 7pm.

"We were right to oppose the war," said Peace Action Network spokesperson David Colyer. "There were no weapons of mass destruction. It was a war for oil. It was, and is, a disaster."

The event is part of an international weekend of action, including protests in the Iraqi cities of Baghdad and Basra.

"In Iraqi Sunni and Shia religious groups will unite with secular organisations, such as the oil workers union, to demand an end to the US-led occupation and its divide and rule tactics," said Mr Colyer.

Friday's commemoration will also oppose recently revealed plans for an attack on Iran.
