“The Press Has Always Been Racist”
Te Mangoroa
“This is not an issue about free speech. This is an issue about racist speech”, states Te Mangoroa spokesperson, Malcolm
Mulholland.
“Maori have long known that there are certain media companies operating in this country who are known to express racist
attitudes. The latest example set by The Dominion Post and The Press by publishing the offensive cartoons of the Prophet
Mohammed, proves that some mainstream media outlets are not only racist, but are also careless”.
“Te Mangoroa was aware of this years ago. In 1998 we stormed the Press building in protest against some blatantly racist
editorials, whilst people in the Maori community who wrote to the paper expressing their opinions, did not have their
views published. The Press and The Dominion hide behind the right to free speech. Where was free speech then?”
“Their actions will now cost this country. The estimate of a loss of $100 million in lost trade will hurt everyone in
this country. You can attribute the possible coming economic recession to the idiotic and racist actions of two
editorial teams. The editors of both The Dominion Post and The Press should resign. If they don’t, then the Shareholders
and/or Directors of Fairfax Limited should sack them. This is the only redeeming action left to restore some faith with
the New Zealand public”.
