Wellington Zoo Keeper recuperating in hospital

Wellington Zoo Keeper, Bob Bennett, is today recuperating in Wellington Hospital from injuries sustained yesterday during routine servicing of the Zoo's juvenile lions, Wellington Zoo CEO Alison Lash said.

"Bob is still shocked and is feeling very sore this morning but we are very relieved that he is doing well in hospital," Alison said.

"Bob is about to undergo minor surgery at the hospital so doctors can clean his wounds and also ascertain whether one of the puncture wounds caused internal damage to a joint.

"Bob feels incredibly lucky to be alive and thanks his colleagues for their skilful work which brought the situation under control so rapidly. He asks that the media respect his and his family's privacy at this stressful time."

Zoo management have begun a full review of the incident to establish exactly what happened and to identify any necessary changes to procedure, if any.
