Peters revealed he has already made preliminary contact with the Bush administration and plans to firm up those overtures at this week’s APEC meeting. Events began with Prime Minister Helen Clark quashing National's election chances by accusing Don Brash of having a secret agenda to snuggle up to the United States. Further to this last week the new US Ambassador told reporters the only thing standing in the way of an improved relationship with NZ was its anti nuclear stance. Former Foreign Minister Phil Goff replied that the Anzus defence ties were "irrelevant" - making new Foreign Minister Winston Peters call for an ‘enhanced’ relationship with the US, very poignant
This month in Investigate Magazine…. After outlining some of the current security threats in our region, interviewer Ian Wishart asked Peters “Does New Zealand need Australia and the US as defence partners?
To which Winston Peters replies “Let me put it this way, there is no doubt that we need an enhanced relationship.”
