CYF Workers Fighting for Respect

CYF Workers Fighting for Respect

By John A (writing for snap.enzyme.org.nz)

There was a rowdy good-humoured picket outside parliament yesterday of workers from Child Youth and Family. They had come from as far as Porirua, Paraparaumu, and the Hutt to take part and joined 350 other members around the country fighting for better wages and respect. The pickets were to be in coordination with the PSA who are also in negotiations with management.

CYF administration staff and social workers work with children who often live in environments which are violent and abusive. When children are removed from these environments this abuse can be redirected against staff.

NUPE members in CYF are seeking a 30% catch-up wage rise for all CYF workers including clerical and administration staff who are often below the poverty line.

If the picket in Wellington is any indication, this action was an excellent display of solidarity and will hopefully deliver their demands.

The PSA bureaucrats decided to once again act against workers' solidarity and abandoned their strike action. Further evidence of the PSA's campaign of 'Partnership for Continued Inequality'.
