Appeal to support victims of Guatemalan Mudslides

TEAR Fund New Zealand

For Immediate Release: 10/10/05

TEAR Fund has launched an emergency appeal to support victims of mudslides in Guatemala

Aid and relief organisation TEAR Fund New Zealand is appealing for donations to assist victims of mudslides in Guatemala.

Thousands have been killed in Central America following flooding and mudslides, which were triggered by torrential rains from Hurricane Stan. In the Guatemalan village of Panabaj, approximately 1400 people have died under a huge mudslide.

Although the storm was a low-strength Category One hurricane, the region is particularly susceptible to rain because so many live in precarious, ramshackle dwellings dangerously close to riverbeds and on mountainsides.

Through our partner Compassion, TEAR Fund is evacuating severely effected Guatemalan communities, and is providing emergency shelter and supplies, including blankets, food and water.

To donate to the emergency appeal, visit the TEAR Fund website www.tearfund.org.nz or call 0800 800 777.
