Published: Tue 30 Aug 2005 09:22 AM
Parasites on Poverty Protest - Sky City Casino Victoria Street, 7pm, Thursday 1st September.
This protest is the first public protest of the GPJA "Parasites on Poverty" campaign which is calling for action against pokie machines and loan sharks.
See http://www.pop.org.nz for more information.
September 1st is national "No-Gambling" day with activities organised in several centres around New Zealand.
Here in Auckland Sky City contains the lions share of pokies and has just reported a profit of $104 million for the past year.
This is money redistributed from the poor to the rich by the largest community parasite in Auckland.
GPJA are campaigning for local communities to have the final say over whether pokie machines or casinos will be stationed in their locality. Were this the case Sky City would close overnight and pokie machines would dry up across communities throughout New Zealand.
