Crime is coming Down – Yeah Right!
Destiny New Zealand says recent crime figures suggesting that crime is decreasing are not a true reflection of what is happening in the communities. The latest figures show recorded crime has dropped 7.1 per cent in the year to June but that robberies have increased by 18.3 percent.
“Volume crimes such as burglary, theft ex cars and vehicle interferences are going unreported because the public has lost confidence in the ability of police to respond. This loss of confidence is the result of a front-line staffing crisis that the government has failed to acknowledge and respond to,” says Destiny New Zealand leader, Richard Lewis.
The former South Auckland police sergeant says offences like robbery demand response and are therefore more accurately reflected in the statistics, hence the 18.3 percent increase.
On Monday Mr Lewis will attend a public political forum in Manurewa, the seat currently held by Police Minister George Hawkins. “I’d expect Mr Hawkins to front up and I’m sure crime will be on top of the agenda,” Mr Lewis added.
