RAM slams Transit's 'corporate agenda'

"Transit's drive towards tolls reflects its corporate agenda," said Grant Morgan, organiser of RAM - Residents Action Movement.

"Transit's bosses want to toll all main routes in Auckland, not just stretches of new highways. That would turn roads into a money-making business, rather than a public good."

"Transit is out of tune with majority public feeling, which is against the market-driven commercialisation of public assets," said Grant Morgan.

"Sadly, Transit appears to have support from Helen Clark and other top Labour politicians, who are backing the tolls that will most hurt their traditional voters."

"What's needed is a political commitment to expanding public transport, which is starved of funds at present. Because public transport is a far cheaper option than roads, it avoids the need for tolls, and is the only sustainable solution to traffic gridlock."
