Corrections Dept Takes Over Auckland Remand Prison
Corrections takes over management at Auckland Central Remand Prison
Management of Auckland Central Remand Prison (ACRP) reverted back to the Department of Corrections at midnight last night following the expiry of the current management contract with GEO NZ Limited.
Department of Corrections Chief Executive Barry Matthews says some time ago the Government determined that the management of prisons by private providers is inappropriate and only the Government should have the power to incarcerate people.
“As a result, the Corrections Act 2004 contains clauses preventing the Department entering into, or extending, private management contracts for the management of New Zealand prisons,” says Mr Matthews.
ACRP, sited next to Mt Eden Prison, has been managed by GEO NZ Ltd (formerly ACM) since it opened five years ago.
“The Department has worked closely with GEO NZ Ltd, staff, iwi and unions to ensure a smooth transition of management. We were very pleased with the number of GEO staff that decided to take up employment with the Department.
