F and P news good for NZ, says union
The union that represents workers at Fisher and Paykel says that today’s announcement that the company is to establish a manufacturing base in North America is good news for the future of New Zealand manufacturing.
Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union national secretary Andrew Little, speaking from a union retreat on manufacturing, said that the fact that Fisher and Paykel was able to establish itself so strongly in the North American market showed what could be done by New Zealand companies.
“This is a positive thing for our manufacturing at a time when there are lots of questions about the future of New Zealand manufacturing as it is increasingly exposed to global competition,” he said.
“However, we will be monitoring the situation closely to see if there will be any impact on New Zealand jobs.”
