Libz confirming 2005 candidates at ANZAC conference, and saying "Thank You" for freedom
Libertarianz will be comfirming its election candidates at this weekend's 2005 Libertarianz Party Conference. The choice of Anzac weekend, says party president Scott Wilson, "was in part a reminder to delegates that our freedoms have been fought for over the years by successive generations to whom we owe a debt of gratitude." This election the party intends to stand list candidates, and electorate candidates in at least thirteen electorates across the country, including Epsom, Wellington Central, Tauranga, Ohariu-Belmont, Hamilton East and West and Auckland Central. Wilson expects to confirm exactly who and where this weekend.
"This is our opportunity to confirm nominations for our party list and electorate candidates, and to declare that the party this election will give every voter the chance to vote for freedom" declared Wilson. The party was first registed in 1996, but in 2002 an administrative error meant the party could not not stand for the party list - they did stand five electorate candidates. Wilson concedes the party took a serious hit in 2002, but said he and his colleagues were "very encouraged" by their local body results last year in which 6 Libz candidates received 12,881 votes.
Libertarianz Leader Bernard Darnton is particularly excited as this will be his first election as Leader, and he has been nominated to stand as the Wellington Central candidate - the most hotly contested political electorate in the country.
"We see this year's conference as focusing on why Libertarianz is the only party consistently in favour of individual freedom and personal responsibility, and of shrinking the state in both the economic and personal spheres" says Darnton.
"It seems that despite the new parties and new policies that come and go each election, that at this election as with all others voters will have exactly two choices: Nanny Government in nineteen different guises, or Libertarianz. Only Libertarianz are committed to getting government off your back, out of your pocket and out of your life."
