Maharey All Talk

During the debate on the Social Security (Social Assistance) Amendment Bill, Minister of Social Development, Steve Maharey, said in Parliament today, "Men must support their children financially and emotionally throughout their lives. They must not walk away from their obligation."

According to the Lindsay Mitchell, petitioner for a Parliamentary review of the DPB, who made a submission to the Social Services Select Committee slamming this Bill, "The reality is, the majority of fathers paying child support to women on the DPB pay only the minimum. This means they are paying 3 percent of what the average parent on the DPB receives each week."

"If this is the Minister's idea of men, 'supporting their children financially' then he is indeed, as John Tamihere pointed out, 'of no substance.' "
