ORNZ backs PM on Gallipoli
Outdoor Recreation New Zealand’s Marine Committee Co-ordinator John Friend, a Viet Nam veteran, today congratulated the Prime Minister on her decision not to support the appearance of singer John Farnham at the Gallipoli ceremony.
“It is disappointing to hear that the leader of the opposition Don Brash would seem to support the appearance of a pop singer at such an important and sombre occasion,” said Mr Friend, whose party is affiliated to United Future.
“Perhaps he is saying that in years to come we should turn the remembrance of his passing into a rock festival.
“I doubt that his family and friends would be so keen to allow that to happen.”
Mr Friend added that events of such importance are and should remain as a time of remembrance and respect and in no way should they be allowed to become anything else.
