OLD AND UNUSED PRESCRIPTION GLASSES WELCOME RELIEF FOR TSUNAMI SURVIVORS

Lions Clubs International have joined forces with OPSM outlets to collect old and unused prescription glasses to help people affected by the recent tsunami.

Teaming up with Lions New Zealand, OPSM New Zealand's General Manager, Karen Barker, says donated glasses will all be cleaned, repaired and re--graded before being distributed to those in need, so glasses in almost any condition are welcome.

"It's as simple as dropping in your old prescription glasses to any OPSM outlet and, together with Lions, we will ensure they get to the people who need them most.

"We think it's important to keep finding ways of helping the tsunami survivors so, even if donations of money aren't possible for some people, we're pleased to be able to help Kiwis make a worthwhile donation of a different kind," says Ms Barker.

Ron Lawrence, CEO of New Zealand Lions, says their aim is to collect 10,000 pairs of glasses and distribute them to tsunami victims in some of the worst hit areas.

"This is a great way for New Zealanders to make a practical contribution to the relief effort, without any additional monetary requirement," says Mr Lawrence.

The first New Zealand Lions Club was formed in 1955 and, since then, Lions members have provided relief in times of disaster and offered long--term assistance to those in need. Lions have collected and recycled eyeglasses for distribution in developing countries, and they help treat millions of people to prevent river blindness.
