Tsunami collection tin travesty

Tsunami collection tin travesty

Oxfam have regretfully begun the immediate withdrawal of Tsunami Emergency Relief collection tins from the Auckland region following a spate of thefts from Auckland stores. In the three weeks since the tsunami, Oxfam volunteers have distributed tins to retail outlets throughout the country.

“The public must feel confident that the money they donate is going to trusted sources, “ said Barry Coates, Executive Director of Oxfam New Zealand.

“It is unfortunate that one or two individuals can take advantage of such a tragedy to line their own pockets.”

A conservative estimate indicates that more than $80,000 will have been raised through collection tins.

Oxfam has so far raised $1.25million for tsunami relief. Oxfam appreciates the generosity of the many businesses and volunteers supporting Oxfam’s appeal.

For all future donations, Oxfam encourages people to donate online at http://www.oxfam.org.nz or by calling 0800 600 700
